Coconuts are usually harvested from the tree while they are fresh and green. The best time to harvest it is between 5 and 7 months because it is the time when it contains large amounts of water. Those that have fallen to the ground are prone to damage from animals and insects. Coconut is known to be “the tree of life” or “kalpa vriksha” in Sanskrit, which means a “tree which gives all that are necessary for living.” Indeed, it has many uses – from food to medicine and even cosmetics.
Coconut water is the clear liquid taken from the young coconut. It has a refreshing and naturally sweet taste. Most people, especially those who live in tropical areas are aware of the health benefits of coconut water. It has become a favorite drink of those who are health conscious. Due to its nutritional value, it was later introduced in the market as a natural energy and sports drink.
Coconut water is also popular in folk medicine. In Jamaica, for example, people use it to treat diarrhea. At present, it is recommended in treating several forms of diseases.
The following are some of the most popular health benefits of coconut water:
Body cleansing – Dehydration due to water or electrolyte loss can lead to irritability, fatigue, dry skin, and other illness. It is the reason why there is a need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. If the body is not adequately hydrated, toxins will not be flushed out.
Plain water is great for rehydration, but during a hot weather, excessive sweating, or after a vigorous exercise, water is usually not enough. Coconut water contains electrolytes similar to human blood, making it an ideal drink to replace the lost fluid of the body. It also aids in flushing out toxins from the body.
Humans need electrolytes to survive. These allow the body to function well. Among the nutrients and electrolytes needed by the body that are also present in coconut water are calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphate, chloride, and sodium.
Healthy digestion – Coconut water is also high in fiber. It is a great help in the digestion process and in preventing acid reflux and gastroenteritis.
Reduces or lowers blood pressure – Consuming a glass or a mug of fresh coconut water twice a day is believed to lower a high blood pressure. Its high magnesium and potassium content can regulate blood pressure and control hypertension.
Hangovers – Alcohol can dehydrate the body, which is the main reason why people have hangovers after drinking more than their belly can handle. Since coconut water is packed with electrolytes that promote proper hydration, it will eventually help the body get rid of the alcohol consumed and replace the lost fluid caused by frequent urination.
Antioxidant – Coconut water hydrates, detoxifies and cleanses the body. A sufficiently hydrated and detoxified body promotes clear and glowing skin. Coconut water moisturizes skin from within and eliminates blemishes and acne.
Electrolytes found in coconut water, such as magnesium and calcium, also aid in relieving stress. Aside from making the bones and teeth and strong, calcium relaxes the muscle. Magnesium is also known as a “relaxation” mineral. Lack of calcium and magnesium in the diet will surely lead to poor stress management. Of course, stress is the reason why many people are unhealthy and aging prematurely.
Lowers the risk of heart attack – Coconut water is fat and cholesterol free. It also has cardio-protective properties that lower the risk of heart disease. It has anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet (effective in arterial circulation) characteristics that improve blood circulation. Also, as mentioned above, it relaxes the muscles, including your heart muscle, thereby reducing your risk of suffering from a sudden heart attack.
Aids in weight loss – Coconut water is low in calories and is good for digestion. Its bioactive enzymes improve fat metabolism.
Excess amounts of sodium in the body causes the retention or preservation of water, contributing to water weight. The potassium in coconut water keeps the balance with sodium. Also, it suppresses the appetite, giving you the feeling of fullness.
Helps relieve headaches and migraines – Coconut water can treat migraines and headaches caused by dehydration. It relaxes the muscles and reduces the frequency of migraines or severe headaches.
Aids in preventing urinary tract infections – It is mainly because of its ability in promoting proper hydration and detoxification. Aside from preventing urinary tract infections, it also dissolves some stones in the kidneys and flushes them out of your body.
However, it is not advisable to drink or consume it if you already have problems in your kidneys or if you have high potassium levels.
Regulates blood sugar – Coconut water is therapeutic to people with high blood sugar level. It has dietary fiber and amino acids that improve insulin sensitivity. People with diabetes can benefit from it because it reduces the level of blood glucose and oxidative stress.
Coconut water has wonderful health benefits, but you should avoid consuming it excessively. Studies regarding its excessive consumption shows that this can lead to excessive amounts of potassium in the blood called Hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can result to kidney failure, loss of consciousness, heart arrhythmia, and even death.
