Diabetics: These Fruits are Low in Natural Sugar Content

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar.

If you have diabetes, it means you have too much glucose in your blood, and this condition can lead to serious health problems.

As the risk of cardiovascular disease is much higher for a diabetic, it is crucial that blood pressure and cholesterol levels are monitored regularly.

Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes (the body does not produce insulin – approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1) and type 2 diabetes (the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function – approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type) .

To keep your sugar intake at a minimum while still enjoying fruit, you can focus on those that are low in fructose.

Both types of diabetes have some of the same warning signs:

  • Dry mouth and itchy skin
  • Frequent urination
  • Hunger and fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent infections (gums or skin infections, yeast infections)
  • Unplanned weight loss

These Fruits are Low in Natural Sugar Content:

  • limes
  • lemons
  • rhubarb
  • raspberries
  • blackberries
  • papaya
  • strawberries

Those with diabetes or prediabetes may need to avoid some fruits higher in sugar because of the effect it can have on their blood glucose.

Fruits – very high in sugar
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • figs
  • bananas
  • mangos
  • figs
  • tangerines
  • pomegranates

Avoid dried fruits such as dates, raisins, apricots and prunes. Thry are very high in sugar content.

See a doctor if you:

Have sweet breath that smells like nail polish remover. This is a sign of very high ketones.
Notice any possible diabetes symptoms. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin.
You’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes. After you receive your diagnosis, you’ll need close medical follow-up until your blood sugar levels stabilize.
