Sciatica is described as pain which starts in the lower back and goes down the leg. Usually, symptoms are only on one side of the body, but in some cases, pain may be felt on both sides.
Sciatica is commonly caused by the compression of lumbar nerves L4, or L5, or sacral nerves S1, S2, or S3, or by the compression of the sciatic nerve itself. About 90 percent of sciatica cases are caused by spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerves. Another cause is lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord, cauda equine, or sciatic nerve roots. Sciatica also occurs as a result of Piriformis syndrome, which is a neuromuscular disorder that happens when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by the piriformis muscle. Other causes of sciatica include pregnancy, tumors on the spinal cord, or trauma to the spine.
