How Harmful Is Swallowing A Chewing Gum?

When we were kids our parents and grandparents used to warn us about the dangers that swallowing chewing gum can cause. Since every one of us has swallowed a chewing gum at least once, it is time for you to find out the real truth about the dangers.

Can we digest the chewing gum?

Our body is not able to completely digest it. Even though it digests the ingredients it recognizes such as sweeteners and sugars, the rest of it remains as one whole piece.

This might sound scary, but chewing gums end up the same way fruit skin and seeds do and they get thrown out through the colon.

Can chewing gum get stuck on the stomach?

Apart from the unpleasant consequences of a gum getting stuck on our clothes, hair or shoes, the possibility of it getting stuck on our stomach is extremely low. Even though it needs more time to pass through the digestive system, in the end the gum ends up where it is supposed to – in the toilet bowl.

When does swallowing chewing gums become a problem?

The cases when it causes a health problem are very rare, and they are usually related to diseases of the digestives system caused by Crohn’s disease or diverticulitis.

So, we can have come to a conclusion that swallowing a chewing gum is actually not that dangerous as you think, but still it does not mean you should do it all the time. You just don’t have to worry if it accidentally ends up in your stomach.
